In Case of Accidents

Accident involving Damage, Personal Injury or Death

For accidents involving personal injury or death, as well as those involving minor vehicular damage (including scratched headlights or scratched bumper resulting in paint damage), you must report the incident to the police (if the incident is not reported, you will not be covered by insurance.) If you cause an accident, please stop driving immediately. If someone is injured, please follow steps 1-3; otherwise, please follow the processes described in steps 2 and 3.

1.First aid for injured (Call 119)

First, call for aid for the injured. After doing so, please move your rental car so it does not block traffic.

2.Contact the police (Call 110)

Both parties, regardless of fault, are obligated to report the incident to police. Some days afterward, you will need a certificate providing proof of the accident, so please make sure to do the appropriate follow-up. In the event that the accident is not reported, your collision damage waiver will not apply, and you will certainly be charged a non-operation charge.

3.Please contact your rental car representative from the accident site

With your rental car contract (proof of lending) on hand, please contact the rental car company’s representative. The call may take some time so the representative can understand the full situation.
* When driving in Hokkaido, please make sure to inform the police if an accident involving the death or injury of wildlife (such as deer or bears) occurs.
* If an accident involving damage, personal injury, or death occurs, please write down the other party’s name, car model, and license plate number.
